What Is Verdicchio?

One of central Italy’s classic white grapes, Verdicchio thrives in the Marche region; its best versions come from two distinct appellations. First, Verdicchio Dei Castelli di Jesi, to the west of Ancona, is only 20 miles from the Adriatic Sea. Second, the smaller, Verdicchio di Matelica, is more inland and at a higher elevation. Castelli di Jesi is Marche’s largest DOC but the region’s best wines come from higher elevations.

Verdicchio is a dry white wine with a light body and brisk freshness. Common characteristics of the grape include citrus, stone fruit, pear, acacia honey, white flowers and a sturdy finish with a mineral lift. The best retain potential to age for a decade.

Recent genetic discoveries have proven that the Verdicchio grape is identical to Trebbiano di Soave, Trebbiano di Lugana and Trebbiano Veltenesi.

Winemaker Description

Vecchie Vigne was created to preserve and glorify the tremendous historical and qualitative heritage of the old vineyards on the Montecarotto farm. The old vines were planted in the early 70s, and their particular position and the delicate balance between fruit and leaf growth means that the grapes can be harvested when they have reached a perfect ripening status.

The wine is aged over a long period, first in concrete tanks in contact with the native yeasts and subsequently in the bottle, and that gives this Cru its particular fullness and brings out the typical Verdicchio character.
